"...Our Ismaili tradition...has always accepted the spirit of pluralism among schools of interpretation of the faith, and seen this...as a true reflection of divine plenitude...Through your studies you have known the many Qur’anic verses and hadiths of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that acknowledge and extol the value of diversity within human societies." - Prince Rahim Aga Khan, London, September 2007.

I read this interview in its entirety. It's brilliant. The man has no ego; he is truthful and honest - an example to be. I would read it over (especially the last few paragraphs) and over again.

Dr. Babul propagates "good, ethical thinking."

My congratulations to Simerg on conducting and publishing this wide-ranging 4-part interview of Shia Ismaili Muslim Astrophysicist Professor Arif Babul. My impression is that Professor Babul espouses a healthy balance between revelation and reason in his approach to the acquisition of knowledge. These were exactly the approaches taken by the Ikhwan Al-Safa during the Imamats of the 4th to 6th Shia Imams and the Fatimids during the Imamats of the 14th to 18th Shia Ismaili Imams.

This excerpt describes well the balance referred to above:

“In Islamic belief, knowledge is two-fold. There is that revealed through the Holy Prophet (s.a.s.) and that which man discovers by virtue of his own intellect. Nor do these two involve any contradiction, provided man remembers that his own mind is itself the creation of God. Without this humility, no balance is possible. With it, there are no barriers. Indeed, one strength of Islam has always lain in its belief that creation is not static but continuous, that through scientific and other endeavours, God has opened and continues to open new windows for us to see the marvels of His creation.”
(His Highness the Aga Khan IV, Aga Khan University, 16 March 1983, Karachi, Pakistan)

Dr. Babul and his family represent a hale and hearty Ismaili family. His work and thoughts are fantastic and he reflects the best in our Jamat. We are indeed fortunate to have the guidance of the Imam of the time.
