Alwaez Jehangir Merchant (1928-2018)

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un
“Surely we belong to God and to Him we return” — Holy Qur’an, 2:156

“Life is a great and noble calling, not a mean and grovelling thing to be shuffled through as best as we can but a lofty and exalted destiny.” — Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, His Highness the Aga Khan III (1877-1957), 48th Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims.

It is with deep sadness to inform readers that Alwaez Jehangir Alibhai Merchant passed away peacefully in Vancouver on Sunday May 27, 2018, at the age of 89 after a short illness. He is survived by his beloved wife Maleksultan, sons Abdulmalik, Fahar and Alnoor, grandchildren Naim and Nurin, as well as his sister, Banu.

Alwaez Merchant was blessed with a long period of service to the institutions of the Imamat and the Jamats worldwide. Amongst members of the Ismaili Muslim community, he will be fondly remembered as Mastersaheb, Alwaez Merchant or simply Jehangir.

Over a period spanning sixty years, he taught students, delivered waezs (sermons) and made presentations throughout the world. His literary contributions spanned five decades, and he played a pivotal role in contributing to and editing various Ismaili magazines produced in East Africa and the United Kingdom; he also wrote numerous pieces for this website, Simerg. In addition, he developed curriculum that was used within the religious education system prior to the development of the Institute of Ismaili Studies’ primary and secondary curricula.

Lourenço Marques, 1958: His Highness the Aga Khan, direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.) and current 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims is seen taking a keen interest as Alwaez Jehangir explains the Gujarati history texts that were used to impart religious education to Ismaili youth in Mozambique.

The Merchant family would like to take this opportunity to thank staff at Normanna Care Facility in Burnaby for the medical attention, as well as loving care extended to Jehangir. The family would also like to thank life-long friends, including waezins, his students, Jamati and institutional leaders of the Ismaili community for their support, care and affection.

Alwaez Merchant’s funeral ceremony will take place at Burnaby Lake Jamatkhana on Thursday May 31, 2018 at 11 AM. A post burial religious ceremony will take place at the Ismaili Darkhana Jamatkhana (Ismaili Centre,  4010 Canada Way, Burnaby) later that same evening. Both will be preceded by a condolence (dilsoji)  ceremony on Wednesday, May 30th at the Darkhana following the conclusion of evening religious ceremonies.

Alwaez Merchant’s greatest mentor throughout his life was the Fatimid Ismaili da’i Mu’ayyad fi’l-Din al-Shirazi; the following verses of al-Shirazi are poignant:

It is through you [the Imam] that Ibn Musa [al-Mu’ayyad] asks Allah for deliverance
From captivity and confinement in the worst of stopping places.
Entering shade in the courtyard of His elect,
Shady and residing in security in the refuge of the [Imam’s] palace.

The passing away of Alwaez Jehangir Merchant is a difficult moment for the family. Today, the family would like to celebrate a man who most nobly and sincerely dedicated his life to the Imamat and the Ismaili jamats worldwide, and we express our shukrana to Mawlana Hazar Imam.

I remember your dad well as a child in DaresSalaam when we sometimes came over and played with you guys. Indeed he was very knowledgeable and kind. He is with his “Malik” and in a happier place. May you all be given the fortitude to bear this loss. He sprinkled many seeds that have grown wisdom all round the world.. Inshallah, that is his greatest legacy.. the lives he touched!

  3. Ya Ali Madat Malik,

  4. Ya Ali Madad Malik Idd Mubarak to you.

I was deeply saddened to hear about dad’s passing away. His soul is with Moula. His seva while on earth was enormous. He was a mentor to me. He brought new energy into me and was vital force in my activities. He was very encouraging in all my innovations of DAWA. Although, I was not physically connected he brought joy and happiness whenever I heard of him and mum.

Please convey my sincere condolences to mum. Both dad and mum are Moula’s special “chosen” Daees. I have already created a chapter in my write up “Obeisance to Moula” My deep affection, warm regards and fervent prayers.

  5. Ya Ali Madad Malik:

It was an honour to be at your father’s Ziyarat at Darkhana on May 31, where I met you and made the connection between the Simerg Malik and Malik the son of Alwaez Jehangir Merchant. I have known both your parents over the past ten years and, as I said to you in person, your father is remarkable man, both as a human being and an Alwaez, perhaps not as acknowledged as he should have been. The list of his publication on Simerg is impressive.

On a slightly different note, I refer your readers to a speech made by Mawlana Hazar Imam in Pakistan in 1960 in which Mawlana Hazar Imam is saying that our young academic should learn Arabic, Farsee and Urdu so that they can read the primary sources; that way we do not have to relay on “interpreted” version of the original text.

    (Quran Surat Al Ankaboot 29:57).
May his Soul rest in eternal Peace! Ameen..

  9. Dear Malik, Alnoor and Malekbai,

I am truly upset to learn about Jehangirbhai’s sad loss.

We worked very well as a team in the Ismailia Association in London. He was a serious guide and together with you Malekbai I had a formidable team. Both of you supported my work and guided me all the time.

I had developed quite a bond with him and Malekbai and I was very fortunate to get even your son to help. Malik helped me in getting authentification of the first Fatimid coins before we could mount them in a frame and submitted to Mawlana Hazar Imama at the students mulaqat on his Padhramni in Earls Court in 1979 on behalf of the Ismailia Association. Malik then published it and printed the actual Farman that Mowla blessed us with. Since then all Ismailis know about it .

Alwaez Jehangir’s regular publications of Ilm magazines have become a special collectors items and at my suggestion he was happy to start Gujarati magazines too.

The knowledge that he and Malekbai spread amongst young students in UK and abroad lives in the heart of thousands. There was not a situation where Malekbai and Jehangirbhai did not have the right guidance to offer. Diwan Sir Eboo always admired their devotion and knowledge.

The Ismaili world will miss them and remember them for a long time. Malik and Al-noor are truly blessed and admired.

Please remember me and Shirin at the funeral and in Samar.

With all our Reverance and Prayers for his Soul.

    Aziz Kurwa
Former President of the Ismailia Association for the UK

  10. My dear Malik

It is indeed with great sadness we learnd the sad loss of our Master Saheb. We pray may Mowla grant and bless his soul an eternal peace and strenght and courage to you all to bear his departure.

I am conveying this message on behalf of Portugal Jamat (the majority of whom are from Lourenco Marques (now Maputo), Mocambique). Everyone simply adored our beloved Master Saheb. He was the one with Maleka Ben who taught and instilled in us all our profound understanding of the Ismaili faith for which were are eternally grateful.

Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with you particularly and Merchant family in general. May God bless you all. Amen. Aziz Noorali and all Lourenco Marques Jamat.

  11. Dear Malik and Alnoor,

Inevitable as it is that each one of us must eventually pass on, the passing of your beloved father, Alwaez Jehangir Merchant, evokes sadness and a unique sense of loss for so many of us who held him in high respect and admiration.

I personally had the opportunity to work with Alwaez Jehangir on various occasions, including some Imamat events, and always came away impressed by his knowledge and wisdom, as also his dedication, principles and candour.

I join innumerable others in offering prayers that the late Alwaez Jehangir’s soul rests in eternal peace, and also that yourselves and other family members are granted strength and solace at this time.

    With sympathy,

  18. Dear Malik,

We are all very grieved to hear about your dad’s passing. Please accept our deepest condolences. We pray to Mowla to grant him His Noorani Deedar and rest his soul in eternal peace. Ameen.

We also pray that Mowla gives your mom and and the rest of the family, strength, courage and inner peace to bear this loss. Ameen

It is very hard to lose a parent, no matter how old we are. A father is like a canopy for the children, and we feel unprotected when he is gone. One can never recover from the parental loss. I know it myself, from losing my dad 9 years ago and mom 4 years later. We have still not recovered!

I do have some fond memories of your parents as they were the pillars of our Jamats around East Africa. They were also friends of my parents and together with my dad served the Jamat in Dar es Salaam for many years. Both your mom and dad were great teachers, mentors and amazing missionaries of our times. They cared for all Jamati members wherever they went or settled.

While your dad was a very learned man and dedicated his life for the upliftment of the religious education for our children, your mom has always been a very warm and loving lady with a sparkle in her eyes and a smile on her face.

We are sure that not only the Vancouver Jamat will miss him but all the other Ismailis from East Africa will miss him too. His literary work and whatever you are sharing on Simerg will be useful to our new generation. Thanks to you for carrying on your father’s legacy through this website.

Once again, our deepest sympathies to you all, on behalf of the Master Devani family as well as myself and Shiraz.

    Take care,
    Shah and Shiraz Abdulla

  19. I am so sorry for your loss!

Prayers for strength and courage in your grief.

May your Dad’s soul rest in eternal peace!

    Amin

  20. Oh my dear Malik,

I’m so sorry to hear of your father’s passing. He must have been a wonderful man to have a son like you. I’m sure he was very proud of you and your accomplishments for the faith. But more than that, your kindnesses toward him must have buoyed him many times throughout the years, and especially at the last, when making his final passage. What a wonderful gift you were for him and your mother. Please know that your pain is shared by many and you are among a great multitude who are thinking of you.

May god bless his soul and give you strength. And peace.

    Ma’a salama,
    Alice

  21. May He rest in the peace that he earned……Ameen

May Mowla bless his soul and he rests in eternal peace Ameen. 55. Dear Malik and family
Please accept my profound condolences on this sad news and after all his unending sewa to our beloved 48th and 49th Imams, he will surely be rewarded and as Mowla says share your knowledge which he did was exemplary. Sultan Mohamed Shah was quoted after being asked ‘ Mera koi bhi murid dozak me nahi jayega’. This i heard in a CD made with geets and a bit of important info in between geets for Haza Imam on his Golden Jubilee 10 years ago, which was called ‘Dil se Dil Tak’ in Dallas Texas, which i hear todate. We all miss our loved ones when they are gone but time is the greatest healer. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen.

  56. Dear Malik,

Shukr – may Hazir Imam welcome him into the eternal abode and bless him with eternal peace and His Noorani Deedar, ameen! May Mowla grant you and the family strength to bear this great loss, ameen! Take care, shamim

I knew your father from East Africa and admired his small “Read and Know” booklets he was publishing – including some competitions where either I or my Religious teacher Nurmohammed in Mombasa used to win as 1st or 2nd.

Your dad was well known Waezin and there will be many who will miss him – especially like me who had good rapport with him. The news of his death is not only in the Ismaili but I have now got 12 E-mails from my friends so far regarding same message of sadness.

  77. i met Alwaez Jehangir Merchant for the first time at the Institute of Ismaili Studies where he was a frequent visitor and subsequently at the jamatkhana in London.
I remember him as a very knowledgeable but humble person — as a ‘”Good Guy'” — a nice person.

He surprised me with an act of kindness which became a lasting memory of him — he gave me a picture of Mawlana Hazar Imam in a beautiful golden frame. This
photograph is centrally positioned in the bedroom and when we look at it — first thing in the morning and last thing at night — it reminds me of who gave it to me.

May your soul be swiftly reunited with the Creator.

Hamida, Mohammed Zahra and I have learnt with profound sadness the death of your beloved father. Both mum and dad have been greatly responsible for my service to the Imam and the Jamat and for that I am most grateful. I have lost a mentor a friend and a parent figure who nurtured me and was a light on my path.

While we know that he lives in light and mercy of Mawla, he surely leaves a vacuum in our lives, a vacuum that can only be filled with his loving joyful memories.

My family and I participate in you sadness with prayers for his eternal peace. May Mawla’s love and light, his protection and support and above all his spiritual presence always bless dad with amar shanti and life and abode if peace.

So sorry to hear about your beloved Dad. May his Soul rest in Eternal peace Amen!! And May Allah give you and your mum the strength to face this huge loss.

Mr. Merchant played an instrumental role in a lot of our lives as was your mum, whilst we were growing up, teaching us religious Education in Dar. We all have fond memories of his lectures on ginans and their meanings which even now stay fresh in my mind.

Abdul and myself both are in Ottawa spending time with grandkids and so will not be able to attend any of the funeral ceremonies, unfortunately, however Dad stays in our prayers and fond memories.

Hang in there and a big hug and lots of love for Mum:)

    Regards

  102. May his soul rest in peace Malik. We (girls at that time in the secondary school who finished as the class of 1968 have been remembering him through Almas (then Moosa). Not sure if you knew our ‘group’ but both your mum and your dad taught us and we have all been praying for him. They both guided us and we will never forget what they did to strengthen us in our faith. He was lucky to have recently had deedar: he went as he had lived, pure and serene. I was at my mum’s bedside too when she went. It is overwhelming but also it takes the fear of death away and you begin to really see it as a transition. May you find strength to bear his loss,

Warm regards, Anise (Waljee) and the class of 68

  164. My deepest condolences on the passing of your father; may his soul rest in eternal peace. Ameen. Unfortunately for me the only interaction, direct or indirect, I have ever had with Alwaez Jehangir Merchant occured after I emigrated to Toronto, Canada from Pretoria, South Africa in 1973: he was the editor of the prestigious ‘Ilm’ magazine published by the then Ismailia Association for the United Kingdom. Back in the day I voraciously devoured material from both the ‘Ilm’ periodicals from the United Kingdom and the ‘Hikmat’ periodicals from Canada. Both these publications provided for me my first foray into well-researched and well-written material on Islam and Ismailism and Alwaez Jehangir’s superbly-researched and captivatingly-written articles seized my attention and I found them mesmerizing and absorbing and subsequently became an ardent follower of your father’s writings in ‘Ilm’ magazine! I very much would have liked to have met him in person. In any case the written expression emanating from his intellectual efforts on the subject of the Shia Ismaili Tariqah of Islam made a deep impression on me!

  165. So sorry to read about this. Please accept our sincerest condolences and prayers for his soul to rest in eternal peace as well as prayers for strength for the family in this time of grief.

The Grave is a Veil, by Jalaluddin Rumi

On that fatal day when my casket rolls along,
don’t think my heart is in this world.
    Don’t cry, don’t wail in anguish;
don’t fall into a hole the demons have dug.
    That would surely be sad.

When you see my procession, don’t say I’m gone.
    It will be my reunion.
As you lower me into the grave, don’t say, ‘So long.’
The grave is a veil before the gathering of paradise.

When you see that lowering down,
    think of rising.

What harm is in the setting moon or sun?
What seems a setting to you is a dawning.

Though it may seem a prison,
    this vault releases the soul.
Unless a seed enters the earth, it doesn’t grow.
Why are you doubting this human seed?
    Unless the bucket goes down,
    it won’t come up full.
Why should the Joseph of the Spirit resent the well?

Close your mouth here and open it beyond,
and in the nowhere air will be your song.
