“Expressions” by Aliyana Hirji

People say expressions is the easiest thing to do,
They say just express yourself however you want to,
But they don’t think that may be we don’t know how to.

If they leave us to ponder
We just get left to wonder,
How does it come to them?
Why can’t we be like them?

But then it hits,
The barriers are left in bits,
You don’t have to know how to express,
As long as your heart knows the rest.

You can sit there as long as you want,
But the only thing you don’t want,
Is to not be left with nothing,
When in fact you know everything.

You know how you feel for your Imam,
The power, the love, the command.
You know the values you have to meet,
The promises you know you have to keep.

If you know all this don’t resist,
It’s only you who can stand in the way.
Don’t be afraid to pray,
Resist the power to
resist.
