His Highness the Aga Khan Receives His 20th Honorary Degree From the University of Ottawa

Joyous Day for His Highness the Aga Khan as He is Conferred an Honorary Degree by the University of Ottawa

His Highness the Aga Khan received his first Honorary Degree on November 30, 1967 at the University of Peshawar, Pakistan, when he was 31. Today, January 13, 2012, he was presented with his 20th honorary degree by Ottawa University's Chancellor Huguette Labelle. His Highness celebrated his 75th birthday exactly a month ago on December 13, 2011. The President of the University, Allan Rock, observed: "His Highness has used his own faith background to speak directly to the goodness of all people." Photo: University of Ottawa. Copyright. His Highness the Aga Khan has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa for his service to humanity during a special Convocation ceremony on Friday, January 13th in the Desmarais Building in Canada’s capital, Ottawa. The ceremony on the 4th floor of the state of the art building took place as a severe winter storm gripped Ottawa, where its residents had so far enjoyed a mostly mild season with above avarage temperatures and below average snow fall. A tweet from Ayaz Somani said: “Wish every Friday was like today…snow fall and Aga Khan receiving honorary doctorate.” Amirally Lalani  seemed to agree. Abbas Ladak in his tweet said, “Proud to be a University of Ottawa Students as H.H. Aga Khan receives an Honorary Doctorate from University of Ottawa.”  In a reference to Friday’s snowstorm, the Ottawa Citizen reported in its story in Saturday’s paper that the President of the University, Allan Rock, confided that His Highness the Aga Khan had told him he was a great fan of skiing, “but not necessarily on the sidewalks.”

Simultaneous tweets from the University of Ottawa, the AKDN and the Ismaili, the official website of the Ismaili community, kept viewers around the world abreast of the proceedings of the morning that began at 11 am. Simerg is pleased  to publish the photos shown on this page which we received from Karine Proulx, the Medial Relations Officer at the University of Otttawa. We are deeply indebted to her for the permission.
