Fatimid Cairo in Nasir Khusraw’s Safarnama by Hatim Mahamid

THE COMMEMORATION OF EID AL-ADHA

Prophet Abraham’s (as) Act of Devotion and Submission to the Will of Allah

And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham)  said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast. Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had  flung him down upon his face, We called unto him: O Abraham! Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward  the good. Lo! that verily was a clear test. Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim. And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation): Peace be unto Abraham! Thus do We reward the good. Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves – Holy Qur’an, chapter 37 (as-Saffat), verses 102-111.

Meaning of Life

Struggle is the meaning of life; defeat or victory is in the hands of God. But struggle itself is man’s duty and should be his joy…..Life is a great and noble calling, not a mean and grovelling thing to be shuffled through as best as we can but a lofty and exalted destiny….Failures should be forgotten and new efforts made. Despondency is a sin, and hope, a necessary part of iman (faith) both for material wealth and, above all, for progress to spiritual enlightenment – Quotes of His Highness the Aga Khan III (1877 – 1957)

His Highness the Aga Khan III (1877-1957): Forty-Eighth Imam of the Shia Imami Ismailis

“My Beloved Grandfather”

When Mawlana Shah Karim al-Hussaini, the present Aga Khan, succeeded his late grandfather to the throne of the Ismaili Imamat, he said:

“Many many memories come to our minds as we think of him. He achieved in his life, for our community, that which could only have been accomplished normally in a period of many generations. The tributes that the world has paid him bear honest testimony to his great life and work.”

In a two month period commencing November 2nd, 2009, the 132nd birth anniversary of the late Ismaili Imam, Simerg published a special series which covered different aspects of Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah’s life; the purpose was to bring alive some memories of his long 72 year reign as Imam of the Ismaili community through articles, the Imam’s writings, anecdotes as well as memorable photographs from personal collections and photo libraries. The series, along with newer articles, is now being published in PDF format. Hopefully, this ‘one-pool’ resource will prove useful to anyone seeking to learn more about the life and accomplishments of the 48th Ismaili Imam. If you wish to contribute articles, anecdotes and photographs of Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah please send them to simerg@aol.com. All submissions will be acknowledged.
