2013 Navroz Readings: (II) Recognition of Nowruz at the UN General Assembly and the US Congress

The United Nations General Assembly on 23 February 2010 recognized 21 March as the International Day of Nowruz, a spring festival of Persian origin,  as it continued its sixty-fourth session.

A few weeks later in the same year, the US House of  Representatives approved a resolution recognizing that Nowruz embodies the tradition that each individual’s thinking, speaking, and  conduct should always be virtuous.  The resolution also expressed appreciation to Iranian Americans for their contributions  to society, and wishing Iranian Americans and the people of Iran a good new  year.

The Everliving Institution of Imamat – A 1946 Genealogical Chart of Ismaili Imams and a Portrait of Prince Karim @Simergphotos

Clause G of the “Preamble of the Ismaili Constitution” ordained on December 13, 1986 by the 49th and current Ismaili Imam, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan declares:

Mawlana Hazar Imam Shah Karim al Hussaini, His Highness Prince Aga Khan, in direct lineal descent from the Holy Prophet (s.a.s.) through Hazrat Mawlana Ali (a.s.) and Hazrat Bibi Fatima (a.s), is the Forty-Ninth Imam of the Ismaili Muslims.

This principle of direct hereditary descent of the Imam from the Prophet has been championed throughout history by Ismaili missionaries, poets and scholars, often with the support of the following Qur’anic verse:

Allah did choose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of Imran above all people – offspring, one of the other, and Allah knows and hears all things. (Holy Qur’an, 3:33-34).

To mark the Diamond Jubilee or sixty years of Imamat of Prince Karim’s predecessor, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan, a genealogical chart of the forty-eight Ismaili Imams was published in a special 1946 souvenir issue. The genealogy represents and defines the principle of direct hereditary descent of the Ismaili Imam from the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.), starting with Hazrat Ali (a.s.), the first Shia Imam. The chart should be of interest to everyone, and we invite you to click on Historical Images: A 1946 Genealogical Chart of Ismaili Imams and a Magnificent Portrait of the Young Prince Karim Aga Khan or on the image shown above:

Preparing the Soul for Akhirat (Life Hereafter) By Ghulam Abbas Hunzai

The concept of soul is related to the concept of akhirat for the reason  that it is the soul which is going to exist after the bodily death. The survival of the soul can only be possible if there are other forms of existence beyond this life and which are not physical….An enlightened, pure and healthy soul acquires satisfaction and contentment because it is through these conditions that it finds nearness to its Origin…

Photo Essay: Talisman and Amulets in the Muslim World @Simergphotos

An amulet [similar to a talisman] is any object that is imbued with protective powers, and all cultures and faiths have manifestations of such objects. In the world of Islam, they bear Qur’anic inscriptions, and religious narratives. Many Muslims believe that an object that is inscribed with the word of God will protect the person who reads, touches, or sees it and that the word of God has the power to ward off evil…Read More

Assessing English Translations of the Qur’an by Dr. Khaleel Mohammed + www Links to Translations

Multiple English translations of the Qur’an, Islam’s scripture, line shelves at book stores….Because of the growing Muslim communities in English-speaking countries, as well as greater academic interest in Islam, there has been a blossoming in recent years of English translations….Since fewer than 20 percent of Muslims speak Arabic, this means that most Muslims study the text only in translation. So how accurate are the Qur’an’s renderings into English? The record is mixed….Read more of this informative piece
